Erectile Dysfunction (Impotence)
Helpful Natural Supplements and Treatments
OVERVIEW
It seems these days that every other commercial on TV is for erectile dysfunction (ED), what used to be called impotence. These commercials are selling the prescription drugs, Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra. (Testosterone, via injection or transdermal patches, is another prescription medication for ED.) A condition that used to be talked about rarely, erectile dysfunction apparently now plagues half the men on the planet. One reason we hear so much about ED now may be that our society has become more adult, and people are freer to discuss personal, intimate problems. Another reason may be that of the increase in circulatory disorders related to vascular disease and diabetes.
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is defined as the inability of an adult male to achieve an erection for sexual penetration. It is classified into three types: anatomic (defective genitals; called primary impotence), atonic (disturbed neuromuscular function; called secondary impotence), and functional (psychological origin; also called secondary impotence). Besides psychological problems, secondary impotence can be the result of side effects from some medications (diuretics, antidepressants, hormones), diabetes, or vascular disease.
SUPPLEMENTS FOR ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION
There are several natural supplements that may help with ED. Consult with your healthcare provider to see which of the following supplements may be appropriate for you.*
*PLEASE NOTE: It is very important to make sure that supplements do not interfere with your medications or an existing health condition. First check with your doctor before trying any supplements.
Vitamins & Minerals
There are no vitamins or minerals that stand out as being particularly helpful for erectile dysfunction.
Other Supplements
Arginine – This amino acid helps in the production of nitric oxide, which is instrumental in dilating the blood vessels, including those in the penis.
DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) – The body's production of DHEA decreases significantly as we get older. This steroid hormone can be converted into testosterone, but it can also be converted into estradiol, an estrogen. Taking an aromatase inhibitor, such as chrysin, may inhibit the conversion of testosterone to estradiol.
Herbs
Panax ginseng – This herb has been used for thousands of years for various problems pertaining to men, including impotence. Research supports many of its benefits, including those for ED.
Yohimbe – Research has shown that this herb is helpful for ED, as well as increasing sexual desire. WARNING: yohimbe is a strong herb that is contraindicated with various health conditions, including heart disease, blood pressure problems (low and high), depression, and kidney, liver, and prostate problems. This herb should only be used under medical supervision, and only for short periods of time.
Less Helpful: cordyceps, ginkgo, muira puama, tribulus terrestris.
COMMENTS
Other treatments for erectile dysfunction include surgical implants, prescription medications, and psychotherapy. It is also recommended to stop smoking and reduce alcohol consumption. In addition to the above, regular exercise and relaxation techniques may be helpful.
